India’s FDI Tapestry: Why China Got One, While Hong Kong Bagged Thirteen in FY26

The fiscal year 2026 has unveiled an intriguing pattern in India’s Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) landscape, particularly concerning two major Asian economic powerhouses: China and Hong Kong. Data reveals a stark contrast, with China securing a mere single FDI approval, while Hong Kong impressively clinched thirteen proposals. This disparity isn’t just a numerical anomaly; it paints a compelling picture of evolving geopolitical dynamics, shifting investment strategies, and India’s increasingly selective approach to foreign capital.

For years, China has been a significant, albeit often contentious, investor globally. Its solitary FDI approval in India for FY26 is a telling indicator of the deep-seated shifts in bilateral economic relations. The roots of this slowdown can be traced back to heightened geopolitical tensions, border disputes, and India’s robust push for “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (self-reliant India). Following the border skirmishes, India initiated stricter scrutiny of investments originating from countries sharing a land border, directly impacting Chinese proposals. This move was not just about security; it was also a strategic pivot to reduce dependency on Chinese manufacturing and promote domestic capabilities. Many Chinese investment proposals, especially in sensitive sectors like technology and infrastructure, have faced prolonged delays or outright rejections as India prioritizes national security and economic sovereignty. Global supply chain diversification efforts, spurred by pandemic-related disruptions and geopolitical risks, also play a role, with companies looking beyond China to other manufacturing hubs like India.

In stark contrast, Hong Kong’s thirteen FDI approvals underscore its enduring role as a crucial financial conduit and a preferred investment gateway into India. Despite its political integration with mainland China, Hong Kong retains a distinct legal and economic framework that makes it attractive to global investors. Its status as an international financial hub, coupled with a perception of greater regulatory neutrality compared to mainland China, allows it to facilitate investments from a diverse range of entities. For many businesses, Hong Kong offers a more familiar and less politically charged environment to route investments, potentially even for ventures with underlying Chinese interests that seek to de-risk their entry into the Indian market. These investments likely span various sectors, from finance and services to manufacturing and technology, leveraging Hong Kong’s sophisticated financial infrastructure.

What do these diverging trends signify for India’s economic future? Firstly, it highlights India’s growing confidence in dictating the terms of its economic engagement. The nation is clearly moving towards a policy of strategic selectivity, prioritizing investments that align with its national interests, security concerns, and long-term developmental goals. This isn’t necessarily about deterring foreign capital, but about attracting “the right kind” of capital – investments that bring advanced technology, generate significant employment, and contribute to domestic value addition, without compromising strategic autonomy. Secondly, it emphasizes India’s increasing appeal as an alternative investment destination, capable of drawing substantial capital even amidst global economic uncertainties.

Looking ahead, while the geopolitical landscape between India and China may continue to influence direct bilateral investments, Hong Kong is likely to remain a vital, perhaps even growing, channel for foreign capital into India. India’s robust domestic market, improving infrastructure, and policy reforms will continue to attract global investors. The key for India will be to maintain a transparent, stable, and investor-friendly regulatory environment while vigilantly safeguarding its strategic interests. The FY26 FDI figures serve as a powerful testament to the intricate dance of economics and geopolitics on the global stage, with India confidently charting its own course.
