Petrol Still Dominates: Half of New Cars Run on Pure ICE, Hybrids Aside

In an era increasingly dominated by discussions around electric vehicles (EVs) and sustainable transport, a recent statistic serves as a stark reminder of the automotive market’s current reality: petrol engines still power approximately half of all new cars sold, provided hybrid vehicles are excluded from the count. This revelation, especially relevant for sites like BizFandom, underscores the persistent hold of traditional internal combustion engines (ICE) and offers a nuanced perspective on the pace of the global automotive transition.

The “if hybrids not counted” caveat is crucial. Hybrid vehicles, whether mild, full, or plug-in, represent a significant stepping stone towards full electrification. They combine an electric motor with a petrol engine, offering improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions compared to pure ICE cars. Their growing popularity has often been celebrated as a sign of progress. However, by excluding them, we see the raw demand for vehicles that rely solely on fossil fuels for propulsion, highlighting that for many consumers, the immediate leap to full electric isn’t yet viable or desirable.

Several factors contribute to petrol’s enduring dominance. Affordability remains a key driver; while EV prices are slowly decreasing, pure petrol models often represent a more accessible entry point for many buyers. Range anxiety, though diminishing, still plays a role, with some consumers apprehensive about the limitations of charging infrastructure on longer journeys or in specific geographical areas. Furthermore, the sheer variety and established ecosystem of petrol vehicles—from readily available fuel stations to well-understood maintenance—offer a comfort factor that EVs are still building.

The push for electric vehicles is undeniable, with governments worldwide setting ambitious targets for phasing out ICE sales and manufacturers pouring billions into EV research and production. Yet, this statistic illustrates the chasm between policy aspirations and current market realities. The transition is not a flip of a switch but a gradual evolution, heavily influenced by consumer choice, technological advancements, and infrastructure development.

For the next few years, petrol-powered cars, alongside various forms of hybrids, are likely to remain a significant part of the automotive landscape. While their market share will undoubtedly continue to shrink, the idea of an overnight disappearance is unrealistic. The industry will need to continue innovating in areas like synthetic fuels and smaller, more efficient ICE engines, even as it accelerates EV development.

Ultimately, this statistic is a valuable barometer of the automotive industry’s complex journey. It reminds us that while the future is undoubtedly electric, the present still very much runs on petrol for a substantial segment of new car buyers. Understanding this duality is essential for businesses, policymakers, and consumers alike as we navigate the road ahead.
